1. Nuovi equilibri politici nazionali

2. A friend of mine

A friend of mine recently sent me a presentation that was given at an all-hands meeting by the CEO of Sequoia Capital. I understand that the primary target is portfolio companies they own, but nonetheless thought it would be useful. Lots of good advice, whether you are an individual, small business owner or part of a large corporation.
I’ve attached the full document, but here is a summary.

How we got into this situation?

The bursting of the technology bubble back in 2000 started a bear market cycle (defined by a long period, generally 15yrs on average, of sub-par or negative equity market returns).

To contain the damage of the technology bubble, our Central Bank (Greenspan) lowered interest rates to ridiculously low levels (1%) which resulted in increased borrowing and started the housing bubble.

As housing prices rose, customers became more confident and increased leverage (household income as a ratio to debt obligations rose to its highest levels ever, 19%).

Overall debt ballooned to over 300% of GDP. The last record was 250% of GDP back in the roaring 20’s before the Great Depression.

To fund the ever-increasing appetite of US consumers, Foreign ownership of US Treasuries rose to over 60% of total market capitalization.

Credit standards relaxed as demand increased for homes and home values grew at an 8% annual rate between 1998-2006, significantly above the mean average of 1% over the past 70 years.

Leverage rules were relaxed for investment banks from 12 to 1 to as high as 40 to 1.

Increased leveraged introduced new products to capture outsized returns in the housing market (derivatives).

US economy significantly overbuilt homes at a rate of 2.2m new homes per year, while household formation was only 1.3m per year, creating excess inventory.

Over building was not limited to housing but included autos as well. Auto sales peaked at 17m annual run-rate, resulting in 2.8 cars per family. The result was more cars on the road than people with a drivers license.

Income growth stagnated during 2000-2007, resulting in median income declines during that period, which couldn’t support the amount of new debt being created.

Once housing started to decline, the house of cards started to fall apart.

GDP growth, which average 3.3% during 2001-2007, would have average under 1% if you take out the Mortgage Equity Withdraw (MEW).

Key themes in the new environment

This issue is global in nature

Not a “normal crisis” and will take time (L-shaped recovery)

This was completely a credit driven issue (too much readily available), not an equity issue

GDP growth will likely be sub-2% for a sustained period of time due to deleveraging

Sequoia Capital’s take

Manage what’s in your control

Spending

Growth assumptions

Earnings assumptions

Focus on quality

Lower risk profile

Reduce debt

Changes in financing environment

Venture capital is going to have a hard time raising new funds

Start-ups are going to have a hard time getting additional funding if they are not already cash flow positive AND have a defined business model

Increased Macro challenges

M&A will decrease as more will be funded through cash rather than debt

Valuations will decline

Acquiring entities will favor profitable companies

IPO’s will continue to decrease and will take longer to get out

Operations Review

Engineering – decrease headcount for next version? Do with less

Product – focus on essentials

Marketing – measuring & cutting what’s not working

Sales and Bus Dev – getting return on expense increase?

Pipeline – heavily scrutinize

Finance – Where can payments be deferred? What departments are essential?

Survival of the Quickest

Last downturn in technology (2000-2003), companies were slow to reduce expenses

Act fast

Be profitable

Spend every penny as though it was your last

Thanks so much Spencer. These documents show that somebody is already taking the benefits out of the 'destabilization' (not death nor catastrophe) of the old structure of financial and industrial operations based upon the old-times 'European' Nation-States.

The inauguration of the age of internationalization of economies has started correctly after Ronnie Reagan + Margie Thatcher + Karol Wojtyla though it had matured starting already with the first world war due to the explosion of technological and organizational innovations that brought the multinational industries gradually to build up their financial and corporate services disregarding the mere interests nourished by the Countries were their Board of Directors was occasionally located.

When the last Nation State (i.e.: Communist Russia) broke down givin a clear end to the age of Europe as world hegemonic political centre, the multinational corporations have been the proper tool for the financial resources to create the new world-market.

The present 'crisis' is basically only a crisis of 'governance' on the newly hegemonic industrial system.

This implies a mere international consolidation of the new 'control procedure' in the finance industry-sector (this is going on in the new emerging Wall Street sanctuaries not in the G8 meetings where namely decisions cannot be assumed and where Japanese ministers of finance can well be drunk .... who cares?).

The second and more critical step will be to negotiate the new international processes among the formal political institutions- That would namely imply the old States to accept their new roles within their hjaerachical importance as stated by the new global economical system. You can imagine the 'political catastrophe' for Countries like Russia (a lousy tenth position at mos) or France (a modest second level one within a second level partner of the USA - the EU) and the ambition of Countries like India or China (both struggling to reach a second or third level status and a shared control with the USA upon their Continent).

The USA are extremely well positioned unless they forget their power of reaction based basically upon the 'Spirit of '76' ....... go 'conservative' not 'liberal' if you want to keep leading the new world order along the whole age of globalization.

Go Republican not Democrat, go Sarah Palin not Hillary Clinton nor Nancy Pelosi nor ... God save Michelle Obama
